Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the duodenum.

چکیده

Thirteen patients are described who, on routine endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, were found to show a characteristic appearance in the proximal duodenum. This consisted of multiple small mucosal nodules, predominantly in the anterior wall. All cases were biopsied, and showed identical histological appearances of heterotopic gastric mucosa of body type. The incidence of this condition is probably much higher than reported previously, and may be present in up to 2% of the population. In all our patients a diagnosis was reached, other than heterotopic gastric mucosa, to explain the GI tract symptoms. In none was a healed or active duodenal ulcer evident and in none was there a history of a pre-existing ulcer. In our opinion these nodules are probably of little or no clinical significance.

Efficient Genetic Analysis of Microdissected Samples by Agarose-Bead Method: Alterations of β-Catenin Gene in Fundic Gland Polyp and Heterotopic Gastric Mucosa of Duodenum

Molecular genetic analyses of archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) pathological specimens taken at biopsy or autopsy, are occasionally compromised because the DNA molecules therein are inevitably degraded. Furthermore, since these tissue samples comprise various cell types, the analyses based on mixtures of such heterogeneous populations often fail to reflect the nature of the affe...

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas in a patient with attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis.

A 67 year old man with a clinical diagnosis of attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis (AFAP) and a past history of synchronous colon cancers in the transverse colon was also found to have an intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas. In addition, several foci of heterotopic gastric oxyntic mucosa were noted in the duodenum, interspersed with flat and polypoid adenomas. T...

Duodenal Bulb Mucosa with Hypertrophic Gastric Oxyntic Heterotopia in Patients with Zollinger Ellison Syndrome

Objectives. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES) results in hypersecretion of gastric acid (via gastrinoma) leading to peptic ulcers, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. We describe the novel discovery of hypertrophic, heterotopic gastric mucosa in the proximal duodenal bulb in patients with ZES, which we hypothesize results in an increased incidence of postbulbar ulcers in patients with ZES (a mechanism...

Early gastric cancer arising from heterotopic gastric mucosa in the gastric submucosa

The incidence of heterotopic gastric mucosa located in the submucosa in resected stomach specimens has been reported to be 3.0 to 20.1%. Heterotopic gastric mucosa is thought to be a benign disease, which rarely becomes malignant. Heterotopic gastric mucosa exists in the gastric submucosa, and gastric cancer rarely occurs in heterotopic gastric mucosa. Since tumors are located in the normal sub...

Hemorrhage from Extra-Antral Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia in a Patient with Duodenal Heterotopic Gastric Mucosa

Gastric antral vascular ectasias (GAVE) have been increasingly recognized as an uncommon cause of chronic gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia, although their underlying pathogenesis is not completely well understood. Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) has been reported to occur at various sites along the gastrointestinal tract and although relatively common, it is often asymptomatic. We report a...
